MAKATI CITY, 18 May 2023 – The Credit Information Corporation (CIC), the country’s sole public credit registry and repository of credit information, in partnership with the National Privacy Commission (NPC), will host a webinar series titled "#IWASBUDOL: Protecting your credit standing and your data privacy in borrowing," on 26 May 2023.
In celebration of the upcoming Privacy Awareness Week, the session will discuss the rights and responsibilities of borrowers pursuant to Republic Act No. 9510 also known as the Credit Information System Act, and Republic Act No. 10173 otherwise known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012. The webinar will tackle how borrowers can secure their personal and sensitive information, particularly when availing of loans online, as well as how they can protect their personal data from scammers and malicious actors.
“The CIC is one with the NPC in raising data privacy awareness among Filipinos, especially borrowers, to protect their own personal data. And at the same time – protect themselves from predatory lending and abusive debt collection practices such as harassment as well as the unauthorized access of a borrowers’ phone contacts list,” CIC President and CEO Ben Joshua A. Baltazar said.
The Privacy Awareness Week is annually celebrated on the last week of May, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 527 signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2018.
PCEO Baltazar also shared that the CIC is working on a Memorandum of Agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to further their joint efforts in combating predatory lending and abusive debt collection practices by erring illegal lending and financing companies.
